3 Tips for Green Cleaning Your Carpeting

Posted on: 8 July 2015

For many people, their commitment to the environment even extends to how they clean their home. One of the many ways you can incorporate green cleaning is how you clean your carpets. Here are some tips you can use to get the stains out of your carpet and also keep it green.

Vacuum Your Floors

Obviously, you need to vacuum your carpets before cleaning them, but it is important that you go above and beyond your usual vacuum. Go over each area to be cleaned at least three times with your carpet.

Mix a Green Cleaning Solution

There are several options for cleaning solutions, but white vinegar is one of the most commonly used. White vinegar is a versatile cleaner that can not only help to remove stains, but it can neutralize odors in your carpet. If you have pets, this is particularly important. You can opt to just use the vinegar, or you can mix another substance in with it.

Possible substances include essential oils, such as lavender, to help with the odors. You can also use salt and borax to help clean those areas that are deeply stained. Before using the solution on your carpeting, it is a good idea to test it in a hidden area to ensure the fabric is not harmed by the solution you mix.

Use Your Steam Cleaner

Admittedly, you can go the old-fashioned route and use a sponge and rags to scrub at your carpeting to clean it, but this can take a considerable amount of time and energy. To save time, you can pour your green cleaning solution into your steam cleaner and use it instead. Using the steam cleaner has the added bonus of using steam to get the stains out. To ensure that your clean is entirely green, do not use the carpet cleaning chemicals that are typically used for the steamer.

After your first run-through of the carpeting with your steam cleaner, you should go over it again. The second cleaning helps to ensure that your carpet is getting clean as possible. Let your carpeting dry out completely before moving your furniture back into place.

If you do not have the time and energy to devote to green cleaning your carpet, you can hire a service that specializes in it. Services like Southwest Chem-Dry also has other tricks that can be used to help keep your carpet looking nice without harming the environment.
