How To Decorate A Family Room With A Cowboy Theme

Posted on: 5 November 2015

Whether you live in the suburbs, in the city or out in the country, if you have decided to decorate your family room with a western theme can be a lot of fun. Here are some ideas that might inspire you to create something unique and attractive.

The Walls - Have you thought of faux painting your walls to look like leather or denim? If you're not the do-it-yourself kind of person, your paint store probably has names of artisans who will do the job for you. Another idea is to have gingham wallpaper. Wallpaper with small prints like flowers, bonnets farm animals or children as part of the design would also look great in a room with a cowboy theme. If you want to have a regular paint job, consider adding stencils at the top and around the middle of the walls. Stars, spurs, cactus, cowboy hats and cowboy boots would all be great stencil choices.

The Floor - Saltillo tile would be a really good choice. Not only does it lend itself to the cowboy look you want, but it would be super easy to care for and it would last for a very long time. Hardwood floors would also look very nice in a cowboy family room. Although the wood would need a bit more attention, you could actually do the maintenance yourself, using products made especially for hardwood floors.

The Window Treatment - One idea is to select wooden shutters for the family room. They're easy to take care of and can be installed in a short amount of time. Another idea is to have fabric curtains. Denim, calico, gingham, plaid, and small western prints are all good choices. Selecting washable fabric means that the curtains will be easy to take care of. If you go with fabric curtains, consider using leather tie backs. If you want to add color to the window treatment, consider tying the curtains back with different colors of gross grain ribbon.

The Furniture - If you want a rustic look in your family room, think about purchasing a sofa and chairs with leather upholstery. For something dressier, think of selecting florals or plaid for the upholstery. Either way, throw pillows made of red and blue denim would be a nice touch. Pillows with a cow hide design would definitely be a good choice. As you select your coffee table, end tables and other occasional pieces, think of buying rustic wood, either dark or light.

When you shop for accent pieces, consider things like cowboy boot planters and lamps. Posters of old western movies and movie stars would add personality to the room, too.
